Taking a course relating to EDI -(3pts)
Date
Fall 2022
Taking Survey of World Music Cultures in 2022 broadened my understanding of the inseparable relationship between music and culture across diverse ethnic contexts. Approaching music through an ethnomusicological lens helped me see how musical traditions evolve through cultural processes and social themes such as gender, sexuality, heritage, ritual, migration, and identity.
Throughout the course, I had the opportunity to attend guest performances and lectures by artists, including North Indian classical musicians David Trasoff and Ty Burhoe. Hearing their work and perspectives firsthand deepened my appreciation for how history, tradition, and lived experience shape powerful musical expression. Because I’ve had limited opportunities to travel, the insight I gained in this class felt even more significant. It allowed me to connect with cultures I haven’t yet been able to experience in person. Overall, this class offered a meaningful glimpse into the cultures, perspectives, and identities of people around the world through the medium of music. It taught me to stay open, curious, and appreciative of the cultural richness embedded in the art forms of others. By learning about the social movements and community stories reflected in different musical traditions, I saw how creative expression can give voice to marginalized groups and help them feel recognized, represented, and included.
